2007 Red Bull Soapbox Race

Red Bull

A team effort, from the starting illustration to the finish line.

WhatWorks submitted an application to the Red Bull Soapbox Race on a lark. Not much was known about the race, as 2007 was only the second year in which Red Bull had sponsored a soapbox race in the United States. We figured it would be a good team-building effort and a fun diversion. The project was both, and much more.

We knew from the beginning that there were three judging criteria: Creativity, Speed and Showmanship. Our focus was on Creativity, pulling our inspiration from the classic "edu-tainment" computer game The Oregon Trail, ubiquitous in elementary school computer classes during the 1980's. Our racer would be a covered wagon, emblazoned with the much-loved phrase from the game, "You Have Died of Dysentery."

Design and construction involved all members of WhatWorks. Materials used include a welded steel frame, bicycle wheels and bearings, wood and canvas. Construction hit a snag when we realized our front axles were buckling under the weight of the racer, but we solved the problem with judicious welding and thorough research of the steel used in our steering/axle assembly.

During the race, our driver Rob Sullenberger expertly navigated the daunting downhill course and brought the wagon across the finish line. The speed of the craft topped out at 20.5 MPH--not fantastic, but an acceptable speed for a covered wagon. What we sacrificed in speed we made up by the design, which brought squeals of delight from the countless onlookers that recognized our theme.

The entire project was a thoroughly enjoyable endeavor. WhatWorks is already planning its entry for 2008. It promises to be funny and fast!
