PRAYER CANDLE

WhatWorks was tasked with designing a special candle for Muslim ceremonies. The criteria required it to be elegant, simple and inexpensiveaccessible to all. The team researched Arabesque motifs and Islamic art and culture to design a bismillah, or a poetic expression of faith, which is embedded within the wax on translucent paper. The candle consists of a crescent shape formed by two colors of wax, with five wicks centered within the negative space of the crescent to symbolize the five pillars of Islam. As the wicks burn through the center, the crescent shape is left to illuminate the bismillah. Numerous prototypes were made with various wick placements to ensure that they burned evenly, delineating the crescent form.
